50 Years Ago Today... 11th August 1968... The End of British Railways Steam. While timetabled steam ended a week earlier, 11th August 1968 saw British Railways operate a final railtour to commemorate the end of steam.
Running from Liverpool to Carlisle both ways over the Settle and Carlisle line, the train was hauled by Black Fives 45110 (Liverpool - Manchester), 44871 and 44781 (Carlisle - Manchester) and 70013 Oliver Cromwell (Manchester - Carlisle). 50 years on and steam is going strong once again, main line commemoration events have been affected by the recent hot weather meaning three trains going over the S&C today all are requiring a diesel behind the steam locomotive for assistance. Oliver Cromwell's main line ticket expired earlier in the year but is spending the day operating on the Great Central Railway. |
